Reading Rhetorically

One of the most important skills that this course aims to help you develop is the ability to read and think critically.  To this end, we will be looking at each text we read in terms of each author’s use of the rhetorical “appeals” logos, ethos, and pathos and how effectively you are persuaded by them and why.

The On-Line Writing Lab at Purdue University (OWL) has a succinct description of these appeals with examples.  You will be required to know these terms, identify them in the readings, and, as the course goes along, use them yourself.
